Kennedy Space Center is one of the most-searched day trips from Orlando, and the first question is always the same: how far is it, and is it worth the drive?
How far is Kennedy Space Center from Orlando?
The Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex is on Merritt Island on the Space Coast, about 50 miles east of Orlando. Most people drive it in about 45 minutes to an hour, taking SR 528 (the Beachline Expressway) east and then SR 405 to the complex. The Beachline is a toll road, so bring a SunPass or expect toll-by-plate charges on a rental car.
Leave early. Traffic toward the coast backs up on weekend mornings, and much worse on big launch days.
Getting there without a car
If you're not renting a car, tours with round-trip transportation from Orlando and Kissimmee hotels are sold on Viator and other booking sites. They cost more than admission alone, but you skip the drive, tolls and parking.
Tickets, hours and parking
- Admission: A one-day ticket covers the main exhibits, the bus tour and Space Shuttle Atlantis. As of October 2026, one-day adult tickets were listed in the high $70s to low $80s depending on where you buy. Check current prices.
- Hours: The complex usually opens at 9 AM and closes between 5 and 6 PM depending on the season. Entry ends an hour before closing, and the last bus tour leaves about 2.5 hours before closing.
- Parking: $15 per car as of October 2026.
What to see in one day
Plan six hours or more. In order of priority:
- Space Shuttle Atlantis. The real orbiter, displayed as if it's in flight. Don't skip it.
- The bus tour to the Apollo/Saturn V Center. You walk under a full Saturn V moon rocket. Go early; the last tour leaves well before closing.
- Gateway: The Deep Space Launch Complex. The newer exhibit on current and future missions.
- The Rocket Garden and Heroes & Legends with the U.S. Astronaut Hall of Fame.
Is it worth it?
For most families, yes, especially kids old enough to know who astronauts are. It's a full day, so don't try to stack it with a theme park. If you can, time your visit with a launch; see our guide to watching a rocket launch at Kennedy Space Center.
Tips
- Start with the bus tour if the line is short, then do Atlantis.
- Pack sunscreen and water. A lot of the day is outside.
- Eat on site or bring snacks. Food options near the complex are limited.
