Winter Park is a leafy, walkable city just north of Orlando, known for its brick streets, lakes and boutique shopping. It's an easy half day, and a nice break from the parks. Here's what to do.

Where is Winter Park?

Winter Park borders Orlando to the north, about 15 to 20 minutes from downtown. SunRail, the commuter train, stops a short walk from Park Avenue.

Things to do in Winter Park

  • Park Avenue. The main street of shops, cafes and restaurants, facing Central Park.
  • Scenic Boat Tour. A classic one-hour pontoon ride through the Chain of Lakes and its narrow canals, running for decades from the dock at the end of Morse Boulevard.
  • Clear kayak tour. For something more active, a Winter Park clear kayak tour paddles the same lakes and canals in see-through kayaks. It's two hours and all sales final, so pick your date first.
  • The Morse Museum. Home to a huge Louis Comfort Tiffany collection, including the Tiffany Chapel.
  • Winter Park Farmers' Market. Saturday mornings at the historic train depot.
  • Rollins College. A pretty campus on Lake Virginia, a few blocks from Park Avenue.

How to spend a morning

  1. 9 AM: coffee on Park Avenue (or the farmers' market on Saturday)
  2. 10 AM: a boat or clear kayak tour on the lakes
  3. Noon: lunch on Park Avenue
  4. 1:30 PM: the Morse Museum

Tips

  • Parking: Park Avenue has street parking and nearby garages, and it fills up on weekends.
  • Kayak weight limits: 250 lbs per paddler and 425 lbs per kayak, and kids under 18 paddle with an adult.
  • Pair it with dinner downtown, or a ghost tour of downtown Orlando after dark.
